What is critical thinking?

There’s a bit of talk about “critical thinking.” A post over on Instructivist prompted me to consider alternative meanings for the adjective, “critical.” There are several connotations for it, so I thought, hmmm… it being the season of lots of news about polls and this being a democracy, let’s vote on what sort of critical thinking we think is appropriate. Read the alternatives, click on the “vote” button, then click your choice. (You only get one vote in this poll.)

What do you think is the appropriate type of critical thinking students should learn?

  • Evaluative thinking. (100%, 4 Votes)
  • Censorious thinking. (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Grave thinking. (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Crucial thinking. (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 4

Yes, I’m commenting on my own post. Bad form, I know.

Peggy and I struggle with identifying appropriate polls for TeachingLD.org. Fearing that we might suffer the same fate here, I’m issuing an invitation to readers (are there three or four of you?) to submit suggestions for polls. Probably the appropriate place would be in the comments on the polls page. Alternatively, if one of you would rather communicate with me directly, write to me at John!!!@!!!JohnWillsLloyd!!!.!!!com (remove the exclamation points).

Given the state of the union, I would vote for crucial. Given the state of the field, I would vote for rational and reality based thinking. Given my advanced age, I would vote for Untinged by Senility.

    Good observation, Tom. Thanks!

Critical thinking = having a finely-calibrated bovine fecalometer.

I have some images. Maybe in 2008 I’ll get somebody to make me an interactive one.

Hm – my vote’s not registering. Strange.

Anyway, unless I misunderstand the options, I think three of them could all be considered subsets of Evaluative thinking, so that one’s got my vote. Ditto on Liz D’s point.

Thanks for the help. I had an old version of the polling software; I failed to update it when I updated the WP version. The voting script should be O.K now.

Ignore my one vote for “evaluative thinking.”

I used an out-dated version of the polling software, so votes prior to 6 Jan 08 ~6 PM< (-5 GMT) were not registered. My bad. Vote again. If you can’t, please let me know.

    Sorry :-(
